Mexican Beauty Queen Busted

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican beauty queen and international pageant winner has been detained by police along with suspected drug traffickers who had assault rifles and cash.Laura Zuniga, the 23-year-old Miss Sinaloa from the marijuana-producing Mexican state, was held with seven men at a military checkpoint in Guadalajara, police said on Tuesday."She is the beauty queen of Sinaloa and was aboard an SUV with the weapons and several of the men," said a police spokesman from western Jalisco state, home to Guadalajara. The spokesman said police and soldiers at the checkpoint on the outskirts of Mexico's second-biggest city were tipped off that traffickers were moving through the area Monday night."No one expected this young woman to be aboard, along with more than a dozen cell phones, lots of cash, pistols, bullets and two rifles," the spokesman said.Zuniga won the Miss Sinaloa title in July and was to compete in the Miss International 2009 pageant next year in Asia. She was named "Queen of Hispanic America 2008" in a contest in Bolivia. The model is the latest well-known figure to be linked to drug traffickers this year in Mexico, where President Felipe Calderon is battling powerful cartels with soldiers and federal police.Top anti-drug security chiefs have been accused of passing vital intelligence to kingpins and police arrested seven soccer players and club directors at second division Mapaches de Nueva Italia in October. Prosecutors suspect the team is being financed by a drug gang for money laundering purposes.

Miss Russia Crowned Miss World 2008

Russia's Kseniya Sukhinova won the Miss World 2008 crown on Saturday in a glittering African-themed pageant where she outshone 108 other international beauties and pledged to "help people."
"And Miss World 2008 is Russia," announced Julia Morley, head of the Miss World committee that organises the event.
The second runner up was Gabrielle Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago and the first runner up Parvathay Omanakuttan of India.
The 21-year-old blue-eyed blonde beauty, who declared shortly before her win was announced that being nervous made her "feel stronger," takes over from Zhang Zi Lin of China to become the 58th Miss World.
"I think I can help people and I want to help people and today if I walk away with this crown I will do that," Sukhinova told judges through a translator after being asked why she should be crowned the winner.
Hailing from Nizhnevartovsk in the north west of Siberia, Sukhinova was dressed in a purple gown, with a decorative neckline and flowing skirt.
She is a student pursuing an engineering degree from the Tyumen Oil and Gas University.
Sukhinova becomes the second Miss Russia to win the global event after Julia Kourochkina took the crown in 1992.
India's Omanakuttan wooed the crowd by greeting them in the Afrikaans language, spoken by many in South Africa. She also referred to heroes such as Mahatma Ghandi and South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela, who was quoted by Trinidad and Tobago's Walcott as well.
Contestants, aged 17 to 25, were dressed by South African and Jamaican designers for the final show after a month of galas, rehearsals and even a safari on the tip of the African continent.
Trading glamour for the bush, the beauties donned T-shirts and sneakers as they gamely tramped into the bush to see lions and giraffes, play African drums, sleep in huts and cook traditional Zulu meals.
Johannesburg sought to use the event to boost its image as a world class city, despite being known for its high crime rates, while the country also hopes to benefit from the publicity ahead of staging the football World Cup in 2010.

"I think we have been able to showcase the best of what our country has to offer," said judge Lindiwe Mahlangu, the chief executive of Johannesburg tourism.
Beauties from 109 countries were whittled down to 15 semi-finalists with India, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, Angola and South Africa among the five finalists.
South Africa's Tansey Coetzee had her home crowd on their feet shouting support as her name as a finalist was announced.
The winner of the event, broadcast live to millions of viewers in 187 countries, has to espouse "beauty with a purpose" with charity being one of the main focuses of the pageant.
"Over the years the crown that is worn by the winner is a symbol for fundraising. Miss World herself, this year, the winner from China, she's raised over 30 million dollars in her year in office," Morley said.
"So perhaps from anything else it does a lot of good things for needy children and old people, which I think is important too."
The 51-year-old competition was originally scheduled for October 4 in Kiev, but was delayed in September over security concerns due to the conflict between neighbours Russia and Georgia.

Miss France 2009

PARIS—The new Miss France, born to an African-American mother and white French father, said Sunday she wants to advertise her country's diversity on the world stage.
Chloe Mortaud is not the first nonwhite winner of the beauty pageant, but she is joining a growing chorus of French public figures breaking traditions by speaking openly about race.
"I want to go to people and explain to them that fear of the other is unfounded," she told The Associated Press the day after being crowned. "I want to incarnate ... today's French diversity" at international beauty pageants.
France has championed a colorblind standard that sees all citizens as just French, regardless of ethnic origins—an ideal meant to make everyone feel equal. But it has failed to snuff out racism, particularly against immigrants from former French colonies in Africa. Discrimination in part fed riots in 2005 by largely minority youth in French housing projects.
Days after Barack Obama's election last month, leading French figures published a manifesto urging affirmative action-like policies to expand opportunities for millions of blacks, Arabs and other minorities. First lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy said she hoped the "Obama effect" would reshape France's political and social elite.
Mortaud, a dual French-American citizen, said her mother was born in Mississippi but grew up in California, and her father's heritage is ethnic French "as far back as we could trace the family

Miss Massachusetts USA 2009

Weymouth woman crowned Miss Massachusetts USA
By Ed Baker
Mon Dec 01, 2008, 04:20 PM EST Weymouth -

Alison Cronin had no desire to compete in a beauty pageant while she was growing up in Weymouth.“I did not wear dresses until I was in fifth grade,” said Alison, 21, who became Miss Massachusetts USA during a recent pageant in Boston. “If you asked me back then about wanting to be in a beauty pageant, I was would have said, gross! I did not own a Barbie doll, and I liked rolling around in the dirt and climbing trees.”Alison’s desire to compete in a beauty contest developed while she was in middle school. “When I was in middle school, I would plan to watch TV the night the Miss USA pageant was on,” she said. “I would try to guess who would be the top 10 finalists. I never thought I’d be competing in it.”Alison’s interest in the pageant encouraged her to compete and win the Miss Teen Massachusetts USA crown in 2005, the year she graduated from Weymouth High School. “I had a lot of fun while competing in that program,” she said.Since then Alison has been busy completing her studies as a communications major at New York University“I’m finishing my courses a semester early,” she said. “That is exciting.”Alison plans to spend the next several months preparing for the upcoming Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas on April 19, 2009.“The contest will be held two days before my 22 birthday,” she said. “I have a lot of things to do in preparation.”Some of the tasks Alison must complete include selecting a wardrobe and keeping herself physically fit.“I’ll have to select an evening gown and follow a workout regimen,” she said. “I have to work with an interview coach as well. There are a lot of things you have to do prepare for the contest.”Alison had to complete a preliminary competition and swimsuit competition to qualify as a finalist for Miss Massachusetts USA.“There was a preliminary competition that involved wearing an evening gown,” she said. “The next day there was a swimsuit competition.”The judges at both venues collectively reduced the amount of contestants to five finalists that included Alison, all of whom completed onstage interviews.“It was a good showcase to tell people who you are, and what you stand for,” Alison said. “I met a lot of really great girls from around the state that have all accomplished so much and are quite educated. The event is a beauty pageant, but it is not all about beauty. The pageant showcases confident women who are competing for the same crown.”Alison said she sought the Miss Massachusetts USA title to help support charities throughout the state.“I’m excited,” she said. “Getting the title is a good opportunity to serve Massachusetts by working with a lot of charities.”Helping people in need seems to be natural for AlisonShe realized the importance of putting the needs of others first from her mother Michele, a widow, and nursing home administrator at Vernon Hall in Cambridge.“She used to have us come to the nursing home to visit the residents who did not get a lot of visitors,” Alison said. “Her example of helping people in need has been reinforced to us.”Michele’s example is especially compelling for Alison because her father died when she was 13.“My mother raised my brother Don and I on her own,” she said. “Don is an emergency room nurse at a hospital in New York City and he has done quite well for himself. I consider Don one of my role models.”Alison said people in need have hopes and goals that are common to all humanity and this reality was especially evident when she visited Ghana, a West Africa nation, with some of her New York University classmates last year.“We were involved in community service and research while over there,” Alison said. “I got to talk with a lot of people. The project I did was to learn how the people in Ghana define themselves in the context of the world, and the African continent. It was a very big eye-opening trip.”She visited a Ghanaian orphanage and realized the youngsters share the same dreams of succeeding like young people in the U.S. have.“The kids in the orphanage have huge dreams and goals,” Alison said. “I realized that I had the tools to reach them. They really inspired me.”Alison said she hopes to inspire people to succeed and help those in need by winning the Miss USA crown in April.“I’m glad I can be a positive role model for girls in Weymouth, and the South Shore, and in Massachusetts,” she said.Article and picture courtesy of Wicked Local Weymouth

Miss Hawaii History :
The Miss Hawaii USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Hawaii in the Miss USA pageant.
Hawaiʻi is the most recent state to start competing at Miss USA, as they first competed in 1962. Prior to this delegates were sent to Miss Universe. Despite their late start, they have been one of the most successful states. There have been four Miss USA's from Hawaiʻi (Hawaiʻi is only one of two states to have had four Miss USA's). Their first winner (Macel Wilson came the first year they competed. In 1997, Brook Mahealani Lee won the Miss USA title, and became one of only seven women from the United States to win Miss Universe. Although they have had many Miss USA winners and many semi-finalists, relatively few women from Hawaiʻi have placed as runners-up.
Two titleholders previously competed at Miss Teen USA, one has competed at Miss World and one at Miss International. Kelly Hu, Miss Teen USA 1985, became the first Teen USA winner to win a Miss title, in 1993. In a rare occurrence, Miss Hawaii USA 2003 and 2004 are sisters.
Many Miss Hawaii USAs competed at a number of international pageants. Similar to the Miss South Carolina winners, there was one Miss Hawaii USA that competed at Miss International. Another one competed at Miss World. Four of the winners competed at Miss Universe, after winning Miss USA. Although all of the six titleholders represented the US or Hawaii at their international pageants, only one won the international crown. She is Miss Hawaii USA 1997, Brook Lee who won the Miss USA 1997 title and also won the Miss Universe 1997 crown.
